In the past, trends in interior design used to take a while to become established and then remain popular for several years. However, in this digital world that we live in today, where attention spans are measured in seconds rather than minutes or hours, new trends and styles are coming thick and fast: so fast in fact, that it can be difficult to keep up if you are not careful. Below, we take a look at the trends that are taking a hold in the early part of 2017, with an emphasis on those that we feel will still be de rigueur by the end of the year.
Out with the Old and In with the New
If you have decided that now is the time to renovate or redecorate, the following tips should help to ensure that your new interior décor is in keeping with current trends.
- Warm, Natural Colours – While cool tones have ruled the roost in recent years, warm, earthy colours are what those in the know are using to decorate their homes in 2017. Instead of white marble kitchen surfaces and walls in pastel colours, think exposed brickwork and terracotta tiles. These colours are not being used as accents as they were in the past, but as the dominant tone in interior design themes for entire rooms and properties.
- Nooks and Crannies – Open plan spaces used to be all the rage but as people seek an escape from the never ending bombardment of communications they are subjected to from their smartphones, tablets, and computers, small areas into which one can retreat and enjoy a few precious moments of solitude are making a comeback. Don’t panic though, there is no need to engage a team of builders to perform a major remodelling of your property’s interior: you can use houseplants, occasional pieces of furniture and movable screens to create private spaces around your home.
- Comfortable Furniture – Instead of the utilitarian furnishings that were a hallmark of the minimalist design trend followed by so many in years gone by, people are rediscovering the joys of sumptuous sofas, deep, relaxing armchairs, and other seating that is designed to make chilling out a much easier objective to achieve. Such items of furniture can be placed in the nooks and crannies you create, ensuring that you are always comfortable when retreating from the outside world.
- Natural Light – In keeping with the trend for creating spaces where one can escape from modern technology and find inner peace, natural light is all important when designing a new interior for 2017. If possible, you should enlarge windows and install mirrors to maximise the diffusion of the sun’s rays throughout your home.
